Always the Bridesmaid – by Lindsey Kelk

Original Cover
My own copy

The blurb:

Maddie Fraser has never been anything other than the girl in the background: golden boy Dan’s little sister, crazy Shona’s minion, workaholic Sebastian’s ex and now she’s also the girl in the middle of her warring best friends.

Lauren has announced she’s getting married – just as Sarah’s husband asks her for a divorce. Nothing in Maddie’s career in event organising has prepared her for this particular combo of planning and real pain. The news that her ex is also tying the knot is the final straw. While the magazines say she should be leaning in, all she wants to do is sleep in. But whether she likes it or not, everything is about to change for Maddie. For better or worse, this grown-up bridesmaid is taking centre stage…

My Opinion:

Lindsey Kelk is always up for a fun and entertaining story, having read her I Heart Series and her About A Girl series and I just love her style of writing. No wonder, I was really excited about this book!

The story follows Maddie. Maddie is such a likable and relatable heroine. She is full of energy and passion. She is writing a Bridesmaid journal throughout this story, since she is going to be bridesmaid at her best friend Lauren’s wedding. She is also organising the wedding in her spare time for free. You’d say that this is not really something special… Normally I’d agree with you, but Maddie is also an events organiser. When she’s up for promotion she does everything to finally get away from her assistant position.

The journal entries are hilarious and so entertaining. It was so much fun reading them, they gave the story an extra sparkle. Lindsey really knows how to engage the reader and she always nails the 1st person perspective. It feels like being there in the character’s head, experiencing everything as well.

Maddie is not only busy organising events, no she might also have a new love interest. That part of her story develops in  an interesting way, some drama included, but definitely with the ending I was hoping for.

While Lauren has her wedding coming up, Maddie’s other best friend Sarah is getting divorced, so two very opposite situations and Maddie is in the middle. The three friends are quite something as well! They have a very special friendship, they fight, but they are so much fun as well, I loved their scenes.

Of course at one point everything that could go wrong goes wrong from Maddie’s perspective. I felt that it was a bit too much, but I understand that it had to be pat of the story and Lindsey included it all in a dramatic and entertaining way.

Lindsey has done it again and written a FABULOUS story!!! Her writing is unique and very special, with a flowing storyline, memorable characters and true voice. I hope this is not the last time we hear from Maddie ;)
