The
Little Bed & Breakfast by the Sea

Post: Hopes and Dreams
The working title for my sixth novel was The Little Bed and Breakfast of Hopes and
Dreams, and if you read the book you should see this theme running
throughout. When I sat down to brainstorm ideas for the book, I knew I wanted
the setting to be at the seaside, with three women – who didn’t know each other
beforehand – meeting up and slowly revealing their stories to each other and
the reader.
We all have hopes and dreams (let’s be
honest: nobody’s life is perfect) and I wanted to find out what these three
women wanted most from life. Maybe it was out of their control to reach their
goals, or maybe they were being held back by someone – even themselves. Mae,
Willow and Melody’s secrets started to make themselves known and I found out
where they were at this point in their lives and, more importantly, where they
wanted to be.
Single mum Mae is running the bed and
breakfast she’s always dreamed of. She says she’s happy – she even believes it
herself sometimes – but even with a house full of people and an energetic
four-year-old running about the place, she still feels lonely sometimes.
Willow’s life seems pretty perfect; she has
a job she loves, a husband she adores and
they’re busy building their dream home. But appearances can be deceptive. Maybe
Willow’s life isn’t as rosy as it appears to an outsider.
Melody is only visiting the seaside town fleetingly,
but what brought her to Clifton-on-Sea in the first place?
The bed and breakfast became the meeting
point for these women, the place where they would meet for the first time. The
place their stories would emerge, where they would reveal their hopes for the
future, the dreams they hold dear. The little bed and breakfast of hopes and
dreams.
The title of the book changed along the
way, but the hopes and dreams remained the focus of the book. It’s what brings
the three women together, what drives them, and I hope (pun intended) that the
readers enjoy their stories.
