The blurb:

The heartbreaking new novel from bestselling author Paige Toon, perfect for fans of One Day and The Versions of Us

‘One day, maybe five years from now, you’ll look back and understand why this happened…’

Vian and Nell are thrown together at the age of five when Vian's mother and Nell's father fall in love. At first archenemies, the two children soon become the best of friends. But five years later, tragedy rips them apart, and 10-year-old Vian is sent to Australia to live with his real father.

Fast-forward five more years and Nell is still angry at her dad for not trying harder to keep Vian with them. When her father finances a Christmas trip for Evan to visit, Nell soon discovers that the boy she once knew is now a wholly different creature. Vian is now ‘Van’ – a wild and carefree teenager who surfs with dolphins and dives with sharks. Chemistry crackles between them, but once again, they’re separated.

For the next two decades, Nell and Van cross paths every five years, but fate and circumstance continuously intervene to keep them apart. Will they ever find true happiness? And will it be together?

My Opinion:

Another Paige Toon book! The excitement is huge every year and yet again she didn’t disappoint.

We meet Nell at the age of forty in the prologue, which is great, because it made me curious and I wanted to find out what happened. Each chapter then brings us back to her past. It starts with five years old and we finally get to meet Vian as well. Her father and his mother fall in love and Vian and Nell have to spend a lot of time together. A friendship builds. However, Vian leaves for Australia five years later, because a tragedy hits them. That changes everything.
They only see each other again five years later and a lot has changed. They have changed. The chemistry between them is undeniable, but he has to go back to Australia.

It’s only every five years they see each other afterwards as well. Their chemistry is still their, but of course their lives move one. They meet people, have boyfriends and girlfriends and soon build families as well. Things get really complicated. There is just now way, they can stay together.
This gap of five years in the chapters allows you to really get to know the characters and you realise how long five years actually are, so much can happen. We see the main characters as children, teenager, young adults and adults. Paige Toon captured this transformation beautifully and it really makes you understand them. I was hooked from the start and couldn’t put the book down.

I loved how close Nell was to her father. Family plays a very important role in this story and there are some really adorable scenes. This book has everything: romance, passion, grief, friendship, family relationships, love and so much more. I laughed, cried and just got so absorbed by this story.

Paige Toon has an amazing writing style. It’s natural, elegant, fresh, unique, vivid and really authentic.

I think the title is brilliant, the cover suits the story really well and you just fall in love with the characters and the setting. This story definitely stole my heart, especially the epilogue.

It’s a bittersweet story, which shows that love doesn’t always end with a happy end.  Beautiful, emotional and touching!!!
