EXCERPT: Manhattan Millionaire’s Cinderella
CHAPTER ONE
Cade Sloan—Manhattan’s hotshot bachelor on the brink of bankruptcy.
Cade read the headline and hurled the newspaper into the trashcan, the
taunting words searing his brain.  Prowling to and fro his high-rise office, he paused in stride and zoned in on his secretary, sitting ramrod straight, her fingers flying across the computer keyboard.
“Ms. McLow—”  The words dissolved on his tongue, and he
scratched his head.  What was her name anyway?
“Ms. McLow—”  He cleared his throat and tried again.  “Ms.—”
“McLowsky.”  She lifted a shapely brow and tossed him a glance
through her coke-bottle thick lenses, a blush on her cheeks.  “Nina
McLowsky.”
Did she just click her tongue in disapproval?
Just his luck.  She came with attitude.
“Of course.”  He swiped a finger around his shirt collar, and his chest tightened.  “Nina McLowsky.”  Scrambling to regroup, he seized the
Coffee-mate from the counter and filled a cup with coffee.
She looked like she had walked out of a 1950’s Norman Rockwell painting, an epitome of diplomacy and efficiency.  He stroked his throat, and then shook his head, amazed.  He was actually flirting with the idea of a merger …with her.
At least with her, there’d be no emotional tantrums. The thought had him breaking out in a sweat.  He never let any woman get close enough to
get a glimpse beneath the surface, to know what made him tick.  ‘Never trust
a woman’ was his motto.
A cab horn blared amidst the congested traffic on Madison Avenue and ripped through his thoughts.  He flinched in annoyance.
He hadn’t felt this bridled since he was a boy, and, he had vowed
never to feel like this again.  But he was running out of options.  He had to score a mega hit or he was going to cave.  Fast.
         And that rankled his pride.
“Here you go.”  He plopped the coffee cup on her desk, and a huff of air burst from his mouth, ruffling a wisp at her temple.
She squinted at the steaming brew, then up at him, her baby blues all innocence and perplexity.  “Thank you.”
His gut flexed.  He frowned and dismissed the unsettling feeling.
“Careful, it’s hot.”
She peered at him above her thick lenses, a hint of a smile on her mouth, her fingers never missing a beat.  Maybe if he focused on the dimple
on her cheek, he could go through with the transaction.
“Take a moment, Ms. McLowsky.”  The smell of caffeine gave him a boost, and latching onto his own mug, he shot her his killer smile.
 “Sir?”
“Well…uh…” he began, words sticking in his throat.  “Drink up.”
“Yes, sir.”  She picked up the steaming cup, blew on the liquid and took a sip, fixing her gaze on him over the rim.
Was that a glint of amusement in her eyes?
She blinked and it was gone.  “Is that it, sir?”  She set the cup on the desk.
“No.”  He lifted his mug to his lips, took a gulp of the black brew and scorched his tongue.  He swore, a muffled sound
She heard and raised that well-defined eyebrow again.
He tautened his abs iron-hard.
“There’s a new position in the company.”  He stepped closer and hitching up his jean-clad leg, propped his hip on the corner of her desk.  “You’re the best match.”
“What is it?”
“A merger of sorts.”
At thirty-three, Cade was not averse to a challenge, it was the coercion
tactic he abhorred.  His lifelong nemesis that he booted from the boardroom
tossed him a curve to the tune of three million—problem was—the deal included a stipulation to muzzle…er…marry him off.
Cade was under no illusions his uncle’s offer was iced with ulterior
motives, but in no position to refuse, he had to take the bait.  A pittance, but it’d swing him from the red into the black, and buy him some time.  He’d expand his global holdings, complete the mega development in Cyprus,
triple his profits andhis heart turned to stone—catch the hacker
embezzling company funds.
The con was about to demolish Cade into a heap of rubble.

#HIFortnight - Guest post by D.R. Graham

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Hi Everyone! My name is Danielle. I write young adult and new adult novels as D.R. Graham. RANK is a story about two brothers on the Canadian rodeo circuit in the aftermath of their dad's death. Like my characters, I'm also Canadian, and since I have one publisher in the UK and one in the US, I get a lot of ??? from my copy editors whenever they come across a Canadianism. Here are a few common misconceptions and little known facts about 'Canucks'.

Yes, we do say sorry a lot, but keep in
mind it isn’t always apologetic. Sorry is something we say in a variety of different situations like: if we think the other person is wrong, if we are diffusing a conflict, or if we couldn’t care less about something. We tend to be brutally honest, so the sorry sometimes just softens the blow of the truth.

Sorry, but to set the record straight, we do not say “aboot”. To accurately tease us about the way we say about, you need to understand the influence of French on Canadian English. We enunciate both the o and the u. Our mouth literally wraps around the o and kisses out the u. The proper way to tease us is to pronounce it “ab ow uut” with a bit of a lip pucker, but the trick is to say it in one syllable. If you can do that, you can be an honorary Canadian.

A tuque is a knit cap. A keener is someone who has a lot of enthusiasm, almost to the point of being a brown-noser. Hooped means you are up the creek without a paddle, or screwed. Timbits are doughnuts, and they are from Tim Hortons, which is truly on every corner. Toonies are money. And reefing on something means yanking hard enough to almost break it.

Cole and Billy are not just Canadian, they are also from the Prairies, which has a language of its own. I'll have to save that for another post. Here is a little about the book. Hope you love it.

                                                                                                                                        - Danielle

Rank - the blurb:

Rodeo is all Billy Ryan and his brother Cole have ever known — until one deadly wreck changes everything. With their mom requiring full-time care and Cole dealing with his own demons, Billy needs to step up to take care of his family. So he walks away from his future as a champion bull rider. Convincing himself he didn’t quit because he lost his nerve…

Barrel racer Shae-Lynn, the sweet good-girl-next-door, grew up with the boys on the rodeo circuit. She’s the only person who knows Billy better than he knows himself. She could help him get back in the ring, but there’s a limit to how many times she’ll watch him make the same mistakes. Especially when it comes to her heart.

When Cole’s gambling debts get out of control and the bills at home pile up, Billy has no choice but to enter a winner takes all bull riding event. He needs Shae-Lynn by his side, but that isn’t going to happen unless he figures out a way to cowboy up and prove he’s good enough for a woman like her.

Intense, emotional and complex, RANK is Friday Night Lights meets Nicholas Sparks’ The Longest Ride… with edge!

#HIFortnight - Guest post by Jane Lark

Okay so this post is may be something that’s just me…. and you will all think I am a little crazy. We’ll see. So here’s the thing, I think that the eyes are the most important part in a fictional character. I always describe a character’s eyes fairly early on. Why?

When I talk to people I always look them in the eyes. I had a religious upbringing, which
you will probably notice from all the biblical quotes that end up in my books, I love using biblical analogy, although I am not that religious anymore, but I did a course a few years back that taught all the reading between the lines stuff about understanding what words and phrases meant years ago when they were written, so I love using that sort of knowledge… :D But anyway.  The Bible says, ‘the eyes are a window to the soul’ that I do believe. I do judge people by looking in their eyes.
My husband and daughter have fabulous brown eyes, so I am usually thinking of their eyes when I write characters with brown eyes. They also have naturally black really long eyelashes, and dark eyebrows. When they look at you it is quite mesmerizing, and my daughter is also always really smiley and happy, so that usually hovers as a light that shines in the texture of the deep browns, like light through brandy, or sunshine through amber, or newly opened horse-chestnuts as they’re fresh from their green case.

See what I mean, if you are a visual thinking person, you are now quite likely to be engaging with her personality through her eyes, and I think you need to do that with characters too. That’s why I need to describe their eyes. So you can look through the eyes of the character looking into their eyes, and try to understand what is going on in their soul.

Ellen Harding’s eyes, the lead character in the The Illicit Love of a Courtesan, my historical novel which rocketed to the top of the US Kindle chart, has very pale blue eyes. The inspiration for her eyes, came when we visited Egypt six years ago. There was an airline assistant booking everyone in on a flight, and she had really unusually very pale blue eyes, I mean her eye colour was so striking that you noticed how beautiful her eyes were from ten meters away. Then I knew I had to have that eye colour for Ellen, and right from the first scene in the book, the whole exchange between her and Edward is focused on eye contact.

Looking in to people’s eyes is so powerful that my friend and I worked out in our late teens, you could pull any guy you wanted by just looking at them across a bar, if you kept surreptitiously looking at them, eventually they would be too intrigued. They’d have to come over. The eyes can communicate so much.

Okay so my other two females, have green eyes. I have green eyes. That is a lie really, like blue eyes are never really blue they are greys, my eyes are hazel, and a clutter of colours like sun dried grass in the summer, but the overall effect is green. The colour is so unusual though, that people do occasionally stare into my eyes, men and women, and say, what colour are they? The last time somebody said it was when I started writing I Found You, so that became Rachel’s eye colour, and Jason looks at her trying to work her eye colour out when they first meet. :D

Jane’s emerald eyes, in The Passionate Love of a Rake, stem from the fact that a boyfriend I had in my early twenties had spent a couple of years out in Afghanistan, where women do have very deep green, emerald, eyes, so he was always laughing at my eyes, and saying, “They aren’t green”. To explain the fact that Jane had managed to have that colour eyes, I gave her a background that descended from Spanish nobility.

What I love is that the Harper Collins cover artist loves my stories, and without me even telling her, picked up on my focus on eyes, so she made a big thing of them on every cover and now my daughter does my covers, the theme has carried on. Look at the cover of I Need You. Although the model on The Illicit Love of a Courtesan’s cover has much brighter blue eyes than Ellen does in the book, and Jane’s are far less emerald, but even so, your gaze is drawn to the cover model’s eyes. I love that, because it so reflects the importance of the eyes that I try to capture in my books. And then there’s John’s blue eyes on the cover of The Scandalous Love of a Duke which is just as mesmerizing as looking into a real persons eyes, but it completely captures the austere character that I have given John and describe about his eyes in the book.
